Gertie Harry by Snapper

I usually take so long to do doomed challenges that I'm pretty chuffed to be the first this time! Very much looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with.

New Challenge

To the Doomed! This challenge is a tricky one, cos I kinda feel like a band wearing their own T-Shirts but what the hell, I figure its fun enough for everyone so here goes:
The character this week is a new one of mine- Gertie Harry. I got illustrator Shay Hulbert to design Gertie, who is going to be a regular in my Bea Comix blog. So, seeing as this is a brand new character, first appearance this week, I thought I'd get my favourite illustration buddies to help out in giving her a gallery!
The task is to create a Comic Book cover based on Gertie, with specific themes relevant to each individual to spice things up a bit! Here Goes:
Snapper- Retro romance stories!
Mattruss- The official comic book adaptation of the hit movie adaptation!
Ian- Gertie, The Manga!
Abi- Li'l Gertie! (Think Tiny Titans, Muppet Babies)
Joe- The comic based on the hit Animated Series!
Mike- Horror Comics! (Think EC Comics, Tales from the Crypt)
Have fun team!

The Shining- By Mike Harman

Wendy: Please! Don't hurt me!

Jack: I'm not gonna hurt you.

Wendy: Stay away from me!

Jack: Wendy? Darling? Light, of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just going to bash your brains in.

[Wendy gasps]

Jack Torrance: I'm gonna bash 'em right the fuck in!

Gimme the bat Wendy...

No idea if this would work or not, just a last minute 'meh, why not' ha. Bit late, been super busy with work as usual but glad I made time to crack this out, doomed is always good practice for speed drawing!

The Shining by Mattruss

Okay so I know the story pretty well, through a number of spoofs but I don't recall ever sitting through the entire film myself. I may have a long time ago but my memory is shot. I should probably have watched it again before doing the image, but as soon as I read "the shining" my head went straight to the creepy twins. Nice choice, I wondered how long until we were approaching a live action image.

I did this image loosely as a B-movie poster. Technique wise, it was all ink and brush with digital colouring. I tried a little dry brushing but most of it got covered under the bottom banner. Head on over to my own site to see the inks (link in the sidebar). Enjoy!

The Shining by Lok Ian

I'm a chicken, I don't watch many horror films, because I really like it when my pants are dry... But, luckily, The Shining is one of those few horrors which I've watched in the past, or I should say, when I was a wee kid... it was traumatising.

The scariest part of a movie, to me, isn't the gore, or the killing, or the humping that is much necessary in every horror for some bloody reason... It is the part where you know something freaky is about to happen, when you can feel your heart's beating faster and faster, you want to look away, but you can't... your eyes are fixated onto the screen, your mind questioning your sanity... the music is getting louder and louder, and suddenly... BAM! The expected happens and you feel a warm wet feeling in your lap... you just spilled your coffee.

And that is the inspiration behind this week's entry... beside, with Abi doing something creepy, someone gotta fill in the weekly "cute" illustration gap, right?

Done purely on photoshop this time.

DAAAAAAAH-NEEEEEEUUUUURRRRGGGGHHHHH!

In the ending of the movie (one of my favourites, incidentally), Jack Nicholson provides an absolute master class in how to act like a deranged psychopath, and it was my go-to choice for this task. Struggled (as I usually do) to provide an actual likeness to a real person (in this case, Nicholson) but overall happy with the result.

All produced on iPad as usual using sketchbook pro. Spent about half an hour doing the sketch then about another hour and a half trying numerous attempts at a background that wouldn't detract from the sketch, but that conveyed the iconic snowy darkness of that end scene.

I wanted to try something a little different for this one, so I've done some simplistic watercolour experimentation. I wanted to try a delicate medium on some very creepy characters. Perhaps something I may explore further in the future?

Anyways, this Doomed Patrol task reminded me of this YouTube video, proof that careful re-editing can market any movie to any demographic.

The Horror

For this weeks, we will all be doing one of my favourite horror Films- 'The Shining'

It is beautifully shot, has an excellent backdrop in the Overlook Hotel- and four distinctly different main characters, not to mention the host of unnerving extras. The main four I see as being Jack, Wendy and Danny Torrance & Dick Hallorann.

Of course there are others in the film too, it's really up to you who you pick. All or none- If you've seen it you will know how iconic some of the scenes are-and the other characters, no matter how brief their appearance.

I have an additional challenges to add to this weeks, optional of course- do what you have time for and what you like!

Challenge is - watch it if you haven't yet.

Enjoy!

Casey Jones by Abi

This is the quickest image I've done so far, Sketchbook pro and Photoshop in half an hour.

It's inspired by this TMNT episode, which I've never seen but desperately need to now!

The caption I added is a quote straight from the wiki!

Just dont even ask, I didnt have any time but I liked the idea, I swear it was good when I started haha

I do love this choice. I did this pretty quickly too. Took like 15 mins to draw and ink and then bout half hour to colour it and add another city scape to the back ground. I just had a massive break inbetween those two processes. I was going to add the turtles as well but figured that may well be a future choice by someone else and just went with the tiny shadows in the background. So how does it look? Hmm?!

Casey Jones by JoeHullion

My attempt. Wanted to do a shot of Casey in a golf buggy but just couldn't get it right so went with a standard pin-up. Since it's TMNT I felt I had to include a cityscape so forgive the repetition with Ian's image and my previous Spidey one. Decided to try one with just line for a change, instead of a block sillouette, and liked the outcome. Might well use something like that again. Haven't done anything with brown paper for a while, and that's another one of my favourite things to do, so I included a texture on this one. Forget where I got it from but it isn't mine, so apologies to whoever produced it. It is an awesome texture though.
iPad sketch as usual. One hour total.
